2012 Olympics to prompt co-location demand boom
Increased demands caused by the forthcoming 2012 Olympic Games will put extra pressure on London-based businesses to turn to server co-location solutions, it has been claimed.
According to new research, space in data centres serving the capital will fail to keep up with the extra demand caused by the Games, while the conclusion of the Crossrail project will further accentuate the problem.
A recent study found that half of all mid-sized businesses will have to increase their co-location capacity, though as many as 43 per cent of the senior IT professionals in these firms have yet to put in place plans to do so.
"Consolidation of data centre operators, absorption of old capacity and a shortage of new sites being built, means co-location now carries a scarcity value" said Peter Knight, chief executive of Adapt, the company behind the study.
The comments come after the website it-director.com reported that growing numbers of carbon-neutral co-location initiatives are beginning to emerge across the UK as businesses aim to become more environmentally-friendly as well as more economically efficient.
