Ofcom plans 2009 2G auction

Ofcom plans 2009 2G auctionThe UK communications regulator Ofcom is set to put some of the nation's radio spectrum bands up for auction as soon as 2009 in a bid to foster innovation among internet communications operators.

According to the website vunet.com, at present there are around 70 million active mobile subscriptions in the UK, though the number of those people signing up for more advanced technology than simple voice calls is significantly low in comparison.

By opening parts of the 2G spectrum up for bidding, the regulator is particularly seeking to increase the levels of take-up of online communications systems among small businesses and firms in rural areas.

Ofcom's chief executive Ed Richards, said: "Our proposals are designed to make more spectrum available for high-speed mobile broadband services across the whole of the UK, and to ensure that the UK mobile market continues to be one of the most competitive and innovative in the world."

However, several of the leading service providers who currently operate within the 2G sector will not be compensated for the increased competition and may not even be allowed to enter the bidding, some observers have predicted.
