Businesses brush off recession fears and up IT spend

Businesses brush off recession fears and up IT spendA majority of UK businesses are riding the risk of a recession and investing even more in their IT operations, research has found.

In particular, corporations are putting more money into online communications systems, such as voice over IP (VoIP) solutions as they aim to become more cost-efficient and even grow in this time of general economic slowdown.

Research carried out by the National Computing Centre (NCC) found that 58 per cent of the businesses questioned had plans to increase their IT spending at an above-inflation rate in the next few months, with the IT sector remaining 'buoyant despite the uncertain economic outlook'.

Stefan Foster, managing director of the company, commented: "We hear talk of a recession, but the Benchmark results indicate that IT purchasers are remaining confident about future economic conditions."

"They are making sure that their businesses have the right technology to deliver growth over the coming years, but they are not over optimistic."

The study also found that VoIP remains the most popular communications investment among firms of all sizes, while, going forward, offshore outsourcing was seen as the biggest growth area in terms of designating operations to third parties.
