Firms to outsource IT operations to fill 'skills black hole'
With the number of IT students falling by 50 per cent over the past five years, outsourcing of specialist operations is likely to increase significantly, a new report has concluded.
According to the IT skills body e-skills, some 140,000 new workers will be needed to plug the 'skills black hole' over the coming years, with many companies set to look to outsourcing for short-term solutions.
Commenting on these latest figures, the National Outsourcing Association (NOA) has pointed out that many enterprises need to address the gap at the lower-skilled end of the IT industry without delay.
"At present the IT industry is struggling to recruit the next generation to the profession, as the 'nerdish' image of an IT worker puts off many youngsters from entering the industry," explained the organisation's chairman Martyn Hart.
"The IT industry may rectify this image but this is a long term project. So how can the IT skills gap be plugged in the shorter term? One solution is outsourcing and/or offshoring," he added.
Earlier this week, the Indian outsourcing industry announced that it has set itself the goal of increasing its annual revenue to £25 million by the end of 2012.
