ISP concerned by UK broadband infrastructure
Recent research has shown that the overwhelming majority of broadband users are concerned about the future of UK internet services.
Almost three quarters of respondents, who were sourced from the broadband user community, expressed worries that the UK was approaching the limit of its current high-speed network capacity.
However, an industry expert, Mark Jackson, editor-in-chief of ISPreview.co.uk, believes that the real issue lies with the infrastructure itself.
"The real problem here is not so much network capacity...but rather the limitations of our current copper wire-based infrastructure," he said.
"New fibre optic networks will be required to help keep the internet evolving and adapting on fixed-line providers, while underlying capacity is only a major concern for mobile broadband operators."
All the major political parties have revealed plans to extend access to broadband in the UK.
ISP providers have welcomed the commitment to expansion, as have many businesses.
Increased access to high-speed broadband will supply firms, particularly in rural areas, with the business internet services they require to be able to compete on an even keel.
