Hull 'open to ISP providers' local firm argues
The broadband market in the city of Hull is open to any internet services provider that wished to offer its services, Kingston Communications has stated.
The independent communications firm's comments come after the city's Liberal Democrat MEP Diana Wallis argued that consumers in the region are currently being "held to ransom" as a result of a lack of competition, calling on both the European Commission and Ofcom to investigate the state of the broadband market.
At present, Hull is the only city in the UK not to be served by BT, due largely to the prospective costs of switching to work with the existing copper phonewires, with a lack of fibre-optic cables effectively ruling out a number of ISPs.
"The broadband market in Hull is open to any ISP who wishes to offer services here," a spokesman for Kingston told the local newspaper The Register.
"Whether or not they do so is purely a commercial decision for them based on their view of the attractiveness of the market."
Currently businesses in Hull face some of the highest costs for internet communications provisions, due largely to the lack of competition there.
