Green concerns and mobility set to drive outsourcing in 2008
Growing concerns over the environment and an increasingly mobile workforce rather than simply financial savings are likely to be the key drivers behind IT outsourcing decisions in 2008, a new report has concluded.
Companies which have previously hosted data centres 'in-house' will still look to third-party providers to manage their IT operations in a bid to save on capital expenditure, however the focus will increasingly be on 'green' technology, with environmentally-friendly IT specialists likely to be in demand, Joe Hogan, vice president of strategic outsourcing programmes at Unisys has predicted.
In addition, forward-thinking businesses are expected to allow their workers to use 'must-have technology' which allows them use a device for both business and pleasure - such as the iPhone - with support for these technologies also likely to be outsourced.
"A profound transformation in how people work and do business is driving a new set of service requirements and imperatives," Mr Hogan told vnunet.com.
"Accommodating these new user demands will be the main challenge for outsourcing providers in the coming year and beyond."
Earlier this month it was revealed that UK businesses are still below the EU average when it comes to outsourcing IT operations, with the Nordic states leading the way.
