Flexible working 'crucial for small business success'

Flexible working 'crucial for small business success'A growing number of small enterprises are recognising the importance of flexible working in the modern business environment, according to a new survey.

Research from Citrix Online found that 81 per cent of small business owners in the UK now believe that flexible working hours are crucial for success, while 62 per cent actively support remote working.

The web conferencing firm said that many small firms are keen for their employees to adopt the practice of 'web commuting' - using an internet connection to work from anywhere.

Brett Caine, general manager of Citrix Online, claimed that this approach can give smaller businesses "an edge, especially in this difficult economic environment".

He added: "With web-based access and collaboration technologies, businesses of any size can quickly, easily and very cost-effectively mobilise a remote workforce."

According to the survey, 39 per cent of small firms would be prepared to let employees work remotely if they asked for the option.

Justin Hamilton-Martin, managing director at 8el states: "Homeworking has always been a strength in the 8el portfolio and enabling Citrix and other thin client applications is vital for most of our clients."

Businesses looking to introduce remote working have been urged to consider IP telephony, as installing a VoIP network can offer employees the flexibility to work from home while still connected to the communications infrastructure of their business.
