Flexible working 'could boost small enterprises'
Small and medium-sized enterprises have been urged to make use of flexible working practices as the fight to survive the recession continues.
The GO Group, a provider of business training and advice services based in Scotland, said that flexible working can help small firms to retain valuable employees and enhance productivity among the workforce.
However, the organisation also warned against implementing a flexible working strategy without an effective and up-to-date telecommunications infrastructure.
"Flexible working has many benefits - especially for smaller businesses," said Lesley Meechan, director of learning and development at the GO Group.
"Before introducing flexible working, think about the impact this will have on your business. Consider what arrangements will best suit your organisation and how flexible your IT systems are," she added.
A recent survey from Microsoft and CoreNet Global found that 65 per cent of European firms are using an alternative workplace strategy such as remote working to cut business costs.
VoIP telephony systems and wide area networks can facilitate popular flexible strategies such as remote working and home offices.
