Data centres still "energy inefficient" report concludes

Data centres still A new report has concluded that a significant proportion of data centres within the UK are failing when it comes to energy efficiency.

Research carried out by Cassatt Corp found that, of those IT staff questioned, two-thirds felt that the energy efficiency of their data centres is either "average" or "worse than average".

One in four of respondents pointed out that the majority of their test servers remain idle during peak hours but are not switched off, but the study also revealed some signs of improvement in the sector.

Two-thirds of data centres are currently looking to consolidate their servers with virtualisation, while 62 per cent said that they intend to tackle energy efficiency issues in the foreseeable future.

While the fears about turning off servers may have had some validity in the past, they are unfounded when looking at the reliability of today's hardware and the new power-management software that is now available," commented Bill Coleman, chief executive of Cassatt.

"Our work with initial customers leads us to believe that organisations who see beyond these old data centre myths can slice their power costs by anywhere from 30 to 50 per cent."
