EC plans new VoIP rules
A range of new plans, which could impact millions of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) users across the UK, have been drawn up by the European Commission (EC), it has been announced.
The EC explains that its proposals are designed to give consumers across the continent access to reliable and affordable telecoms services, while its ideas are set to be the subject of an ongoing consultation process, reports CB Magazine.
It is anticipated that subsequent changes to EC regulations will make telecoms cheaper and more effectively regulated across Europe, but some observers are not convinced that the correct approach is being taken.
Rob Stankley, a technology expert at the law firm Reed Smith Richards Butler, told the news provider: "VoIP features are being included in lots of things that cannot be confused with traditional telephone services and should not be regulated in the same way.
"There is a particular concern that the commission will over-regulate VoIP services. The risk is that it will stifle innovation."
Plans put forward by the EC would make it obligatory for VoIP tools to be capable of making emergency calls in the UK and elsewhere in Europe.
