Data losses 'hit business' finance and reputation'

Data losses 'hit business' finance and reputation'Businesses that fail to put into place continuity or disaster recovery plans will not just lose out financially but will be at risk of damaging their reputation and standing among customers and peers, experts have warned.

Just recently the Boston Computer Network revealed that six per cent of all PCs will suffer an episode of data loss in any given year, while 31 per cent of all corporate and private users have lost all of their files due to events beyond their control at some point in the past.

According to Small Business Computing, financial losses are the biggest short-term consequence of information loss, since "data is valuable to the business as a whole"

Commenting on the steps organisations need to take to protect their data, a spokesperson for the firm noted: "Having the security policy in place and ensuring that good policies are enforced - big dash those are the main things. Disaster recovery is also important and having a secondary backup system that is off-site so you can restore the data. "

The comments come as the European Commission draws up plans to make it mandatory for organisations that lose or mishandle personal data to automatically notify their customers straightaway.
