Expert offers cost-cutting technology tips

Expert offers cost-cutting technology tipsThe impact of the credit crunch makes the current climate an ideal time for firms to address their IT budgets, an expert has suggested.

Paul Fredric, writing at Information Week, said many smaller firms could be missing opportunities to save money on their technology usage.

Businesses should first analyse their bills to work out where their payments are going, but he added that the most common culprit of excess cost is cellular bills.

"You'd be surprised by how many companies - of all sizes - simply pay whatever bills come in, without taking the time to really see what they're paying for," Mr Fredric wrote.

Firms might consider turning to VoIP to try and cut down on the phone costs, or consider investing in converged IT technology which can save time and resources by combining functions such as hosted email and video conferencing over the internet.

Behzad Behtash, in his blog at Information Week, recently said that wide area networks can help firms save money by allowing a greater number of satellite offices and telecommuters, thereby saving on travel costs.
