CLA hits out at 'broadband divide'

CLA hits out at 'broadband divide'The Country Land & Business Association (CLA) has again criticised plans for the rollout of super-fast broadband networks in the UK.

With providers of next-generation broadband services currently focused on cities, the organisation is concerned that rural enterprises will be left behind once faster broadband speeds become a reality.

South-west regional director of the CLA John Mortimer told thisissomerset.co.uk that Virgin and BT are guilty of ignoring rural communities in their bid to increase high-speed broadband coverage, and urged the government to intervene.

"If the urban/rural divide really is a myth then the competition should be about providing fast broadband coverage across the whole nation, not only in built-up areas," Mr Mortimer commented.

"As things stand, the reality for rural businesses and families is that they will be left trailing in the wake of their city cousins."

Last month, research from uSwitch.com revealed that 42 per cent of UK consumers are dissatisfied with their internet service provider.
