Business VoIP use to drive IP sales over next five years
Sales of Internet protocol (VoIP) handsets are set to double over the next five years, driven largely by the increased deployment of voice over IP communications solutions from the corporate sector, a new report has predicted.
According to figures put forward by the Dell'Oro Group, global revenues to be generated by the sales of IP technology will amount to more than £3 billion by 2013, with the trade of IP-capable handsets growing by an annual rate of 25 per cent.
Furthermore, the proportion of IP lines installed within Western Europe and the US will rise from the current level of just under 20 per cent of the total, to around 50 per cent over the same period, the group also stated.
Commenting on the expected future trends, Alan Weckel, senior analyst at the company, said: "Most of the strong future growth in IP Phones will continue to come from IP desk phones that will begin incorporating more features and functionality, such as larger color displays, touch screens, and video capabilities, as the cost to add these features declines and users begin to expect their desk phones to have a feature set similar to their cell phones."
He added that, by 2012 there will be the necessary infrastructure in place to support VoIP technology being used in every desktop.
In comparison, revenues from ADSL-driven technologies is expected to fall by 40 per cent over the same period.
