Business internet connections 'overloaded'

Business internet connections 'overloaded'The internet connections of many UK businesses cannot cope with the amount of data they handle, a new survey has indicated.

According to research from NetEvidence, one in six internet connections are currently overloaded to a point that is likely to have a major impact on performance for the user.

The company, which surveyed 6,000 organisations with 'leased line' internet services, also found that many firms choose not to upgrade their connection despite being aware of such problems.

"Service providers themselves are not chasing for upgrades. However, if asked to re-price, many will offer competitively-priced upgrades," said Richard Thomas, managing director at NetEvidence.

"It's much like the market for mobile phones: when you upgrade, you can get a new mobile as well as a better contract."

According to the firm, many businesses lack the budget resources to upgrade their IT systems at the current time.

However, the growth of technology such as VoIP and virtual conferencing means that companies are taking up more bandwidth on their internet connections.

A recent report from broadband.co.uk stated that the average broadband speed in the UK is now 4.137Mbps.
