Wi-Fi hotspot growth to be driven by consumers as well as business
Growing demand from consumers as well as business users will drive the future success of wireless hotspots within the UK, a new report has claimed.
While corporate users accounted for approximately 75 per cent of all hotspot connections in 2007, the increasing availability of dual-mode handsets and falling access fees will see a substantial increase in the number of consumer users, according to MultiMedia Intelligence.
As such, online communications providers will target more consumer-heavy public areas over the coming months as non-business users look to benefit from mobile internet access and cheap voice over IP (VoIP) solutions.
The new report also suggested that, though revenues per connect are likely to fall in the near future, overall revenue levels will nevertheless remain steady or even increase, with Wi-Fi providers continuing to benefit from corporate users paying access fees in locations such as hotels and airports.
Currently, around 80 per cent of all access revenue is generated through business users.
Furthermore, in an attempt to offset the declining average revenues per user, hotspot operators may expand into offering back office services, applications and content, MultiMedia also concluded.
