VoIP uptake booming among SMEs

VoIP uptake booming among SMEsA majority of small-to-medium sized businesses (SMEs) are set to adopt voice over internet protocol (VoIP) technology as a means of improving communications and cutting back on costs new research has revealed.

According to a report published in Business World, a study carried out by Cisco Ireland found that 60 per cent of SMEs intend to invest in VoIP systems in the short-term future.

Though the technology has previously seen high uptake rates among larger businesses and organisations, including the NHS, falling costs have led to growing numbers of smaller firms looking into VoIP as a means of conducting business and introducing more flexible working practices for their employees.

However, a recent report from ABI Research concluded that the future of online communications will rest with large companies which are able to set up and manage their own IP PBX networks.

"Increasingly, hosted services will interest larger organisations and will be offered by a greater number of service providers as premises-deployed, small-business VoIP solutions become more cost-effective," said Stan Schatt, ABI Research's vice president. ADNFCR-1152-ID-18317676-ADNFCR
