Businesses acknowledging that VoIP is 'here to stay'
Growing numbers of small businesses in the UK are turning to online communications systems as they realise that voice over IP technology is "here to stay", the Communications Management Association has revealed.
While such technology was previously out of reach of smaller firms, due largely to the prohibitive costs of installation and a lack of specialist knowledge in the area, recent advances in the field have led to much increased uptake within the sector, according to Maren Bennette, the leader of the CMA's Unified Communications Forum.
"Nowadays the large manufacturers and a host of smaller start-up IP phone manufacturers and are making IP phones that are little more expensive than the traditional analogue phones," he stated.
The comments come soon after the research and consultancy firm Ilume Consulting, reported in its latest quarterly Convergence Bulletin that the UK's VoIP market has grown by around 50 per cent in the last three months alone.
At present, there are 154,000 active users of the technology across the UK, a figure most experts believe will rise significantly over the short-term future.
