University benefiting from improved communications

The University of Wolverhampton is aiming to improve its reputation through a programme of significant investment in its online communications systems.

With the university consisting of ten separate schools across a number of locations and being home to 23,000 students and 2,000 members of staff, the focus of the £60 million programme is to enable it to converge voice and data on to a single network infrastructure.

The three campuses of Wolverhampton, Telford and Walsall have all been linked together using the West Midlands Broadband Network, with the network supporting more than 5,000 network access points in addition to allowing for wireless networking across key learning and open access areas.

Commenting on the new communications technology, Dr Phil Range, director of IT services at the University of Wolverhampton, told the website Public Technology: "It provides e-learning, email and communications to all our staff and students accessible either on campus or via the Internet; it provides access to a huge variety of information about the University to everyone; it is used to place orders and monitor budgets, arrange meetings and a whole variety of administrative tasks."
