Technology to push mobile workers beyond 1bn mark

Technology to push mobile workers beyond 1bn markThe number of mobile workers across the globe will reach the one billion mark by 2011, the intelligence firm IDC has reported.

In addition to increasing pressure on employers to provide their workforce with an ideal work/life balance, the trend will be driven by ever-evolving technology, the organisation's new report has claimed.

Advances in the field of mobile communications, including voice over IP (VoIP), 3G, Wi-Max and fixed-mobile convergence should ensure that as much as 75 per cent of the workforce in some of the world's most developed economies are able to do their jobs remotely.

However, Stephen Drake, programme director of mobile enterprise services at IDC, warned: "Although mobility deployments can bring a number of benefits to companies, they also bring risks associated with sensitive data sitting on small devices that can be easily lost."

"Developing a plan around managing and securing devices should be part of any large mobility deployment," he added.

The predictions come soon after research from Access Markets International(AMI)found that small and medium-sized businesses in the UK increased their IT spending by around eight per cent during 2007 in comparison to the previous year.
