Flexibility a major advantage of UK SMEs

Flexibility a major advantage of UK SMEsWhile small businesses may not be able to offer the high salaries, by introducing flexible working practices, they can often trump their larger rivals, the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has explained.

According to recent figures from the Chartered Institute of Professional Development (CIPD) around 75 per cent of UK small businesses face staff retention difficulties.

Alongside fostering a sense of "camaraderie" and providing an attractive working environment, investing in internet communications systems which allow employees to work flexibly, including from home, can effectively ease this problem and make up for some of the disadvantages of working for a small company, the FSB stated.

"That's where the small businesses tend to trump the larger ones - the working environment, the flexibility they can offer their staff and the general brighter outlook of the workplace," said Matthew Knowles, a spokesperson for the organisation.

A report recently published in Business World cited a study undertaken by Cisco Ireland, which found that 60 per cent of small businesses have plans to invest in a VoIP system at some point in the near future.
