SMBs 'can benefit from consumer communications technology'
Small-to-medium sized businesses (SMBs) can make effective use of mobile consumer technologies in order to boost their productivity levels, a newreport has concluded.
With growing numbers of businesses introducing flexible working practices, research conduced by Yankee Group found that new online communications technologies can increase productivity among mobile and home-based workers by between 25 and 50 per cent.
Wireless laptops, wikis, smart-phones, blogs and instant messaging services are among the consumer technologies that can best benefit SMBs, the report stated.
However, according to the group's president, Steve Hilton, a significant proportion of businesses are still neglecting to make use of recent communicative innovations.
"SMBs are stuck in a productivity malaise using technology no more helpful than a bikini in a meat locker." he said.
"Ubiquitous connectivity is becoming a reality, and for SMBs to get ahead in this global connectivity revolution, organisations must adopt consumer and business technologies to improve employees' work/life balance and drive productivity."
In comparison, however, the study also found voice-only mobile phones and YouTube to be among the consumer technologies that actually serve to decrease employee productivity levels.
