Businesses benefiting from London's hotspots
London is leading the way when it comes to the uptake of wireless internet technology, a new report has confirmed.
According to the latest Wi-Fi Hotspot index compiled and published by iPass, around one per cent of the entire world's wireless activity takes place in London in comparison to the 0.3 per cent rate seen in such second-placed cities as New York, San Francisco and Chicago.
Such a high uptake rate has been driven by the emergence of a number of hotspots across the city, including the Canary Wharf district and the City area, which the report concludes have enabled businesses to stay in touch with the markets through wireless broadband and VoIP telephony.
Joel Wachtler, vice president of marketing and strategy at iPass, said: "The results indicate that business demand for Wi-Fi hotspots has grown from a novelty to a mainstream need.
"We are also seeing that use of hotspots is a global phenomenon, with the standard for growth being set in European and Asian countries."
According to recent figures from the regulator Ofcom, there are now one million active VoIP users in the UK, with 60 per cent of the adult population aware of the technology.
