Local council unveils new IP communications system
Congleton Borough Council has become one of the first local authorities in the UK to adopt a fully-comprehensive internet protocol communications system.
In a £130,000 deal signed with a systems provider, the council is to roll out a new VoIP communications system as well as an integrated desktop application for improving call handling and management and a wide area network to support its operations across the county.
Given that the council works with a number of remote sites, it was felt that its communications lines needed to be rationalised and sped up.
"Improved performance and quality of service were the main drivers in the selection of the new communications system," said Neil West, head of IT at Congleton Borough Council.
"We wanted to be able to use the same infrastructure for voice and data, whilst still having the assurance that the platform was reliable, resilient and secure."
Mr West also confirmed that the authority has also seen the benefits, both financial and in terms of productivity, of the new technology, calling the scheme a "resounding success".
