Employers urged to adopt flexible online working practices
Workers representatives are calling for employers to introduce more flexible working practices after new research has found that Britons face the longest commute in the whole of Europe.
According to the figures released by the Trade Unions Congress, more than 1.3 million people working in London face a daily commute of more than one hour, while their counterparts across the rest of the country are also beginning to face increased travel burdens.
Commutes of over one hour have risen by 43 per cent in Wales as well as by 41.4 per cent in the south-west, leading the TUC to call for businesses to invest in online communications to allow their employees to work from home and benefit from flexible working practices.
TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said: "We work some of the longest hours in Europe, and on top of this have to endure the second longest daily commute in Europe - on average 54 minutes per day.
"This adds up to a very stressful working week for millions of workers across the UK, and employers could ease this strain for their workers by introducing flexible working."
Recent research carried out by Cisco found that 60 per cent of UK small businesses intend to invest in voice over IP (VoIP) systems at some point in the near future, with improved worker flexibility a key motivating factor.
