Council saves £1.2m thanks to VoIP adoption

Council saves £1.2m thanks to VoIP adoptionCambridgeshire County Council has announced that it has saved around £1.2 million already as a direct result of installing voice over IP (VoIP) technology just two years ago.

While previously different sites operated by the Council were served by different telephone operators, meaning prices varied, through adopting IP telephony software, significant savings have been made both in terms of phone calls as well as cutting back on travel expenses for employees.

At present, according to the Council's statistics, around 500 of its 4,000 employees have moved from the fixed-line systems to the in-house VoIP solutions, while bosses also intend to introduce the ability for its workers to 'hot desk' and promote home-working in a drive to cut down on the amount of office space being used.

Commenting on the scheme's success, Alan Shields, technical architect at Cambridgeshire County Council, told Computer Weekly: "We could not achieve flexible working using dedicated numbers with dedicated phones, which is why the number portability of VoIP - where their numbers follow staff regardless of which workstation they log into - appealed."

Mr Shields added that the Council is also benefiting from improved real-time video conferencing abilities due to the policy of integrating the new technology with existing systems.
