Businesses split over IP telephony
A significant number of enterprises still do not totally trust open source voice over IP (VoIP) telephony, it has been revealed.
Speaking at a recent VoiceCon conference in the US, Murray Butler, a senior network analyst at the technology firm 3M explained that the communications dilemma being faced by today's businesses is similar to the question of infrastructure faced by organizations five years ago.
"The drive for open source solutions to real problems is seeping out of the desktop and server racks into other areas of IT that are traditionally closed platforms," the website Computer Weekly reported him as saying.
The comments follow on from a study carried out by the research company IDC last month which revealed that, while VoIP is still in its nascent stages and there is yet to be a great level of demand for it, businesses are becoming more sophisticated in their expectations for IP phones.
As well as good audio quality, firms are coming to expect support for SIP and support for application integration when selecting a service, the study found.
