UK businesses neglecting VoIP security, study shows

UK businesses neglecting VoIP security, study showsDespite having virus protection and firewalls in place, many UK businesses are failing to properly protect their online communication systems, the National Computing Centre (NCC) has revealed.

A recent study undertaken by the IT body found that 40 per cent of those firms questioned have yet to secure their wireless network, while just 15 per cent have taken steps to secure their VoIP networks.

According to the NCC's managing director Stefan Foster, failing to take adequate security measures is just like "locking a front door in a house but leaving the windows open", with fraudsters increasingly targeting unsecured Wi-Fi and VoIP networks.

"Unsecure wireless is putting organisations and those who interact with them at unnecessary risk," he said.

Two-thirds of UK businesses do, however, employ special IT staff dedicated to security, though this rate decreases among smaller firms, the study also found.

The comments come soon after a report from the communications regulator Ofcom revealed that many UK businesses are failing to take up VoIP technology due to the perceived high security risk.
